Michelle Pomphrey began her work in trauma registries in 1993 by establishing the University of Virginia Health Systems registry program. She joined the American Trauma Society in 1994 and was a founding member of the Trauma Registrar’s Council serving as their first elected chair in 1996. Michelle served on the ATS Board of Directors for 16 years, as well as the national course coordinator for the ATS Trauma Registrar course. In this role, she taught classes throughout the country for 16 years, maintained the course content and materials, and served as the project coordinator for the first distance learning version of the program.
During her service with ATS, she was also one of the founding members of the ATS Registrar Certification Board and was among the first six trauma registrars in the United States to be certified as a CSTR in 2000. Michelle has been active with the American College of Surgeons over the years, serving as a clinical consultant and data auditor for the National Sample Project and TQIP. She has served as a committee member for the NTDB, TQIP, and TQIP training committees as well as a guest speaker for several TQIP conferences. She has also been the invited speaker at state trauma conferences in Texas, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Idaho, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Maryland, and Florida. Michelle has made presentations over the years for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), The Society of Trauma Nurses, and the State Leadership Meeting for Trauma EMS- Systems in Washington, D.C.
Additionally, Michelle has co-authored several papers, the most recent “Variability in Interhospital Trauma Data Coding and Scoring: A Challenge to the Accuracy of Aggregated Trauma Registries” published in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. She has served as guest editor for the Journal of Registry Management and was interviewed and featured in an article by Trauma News. She established Pomphrey Consulting in 2000 and has been serving the trauma community throughout the country ever since. Pomphrey Consulting is a comprehensive trauma program service provider. This includes education and training for both the trauma registrar and the trauma program manager, as well as staffing for the trauma registry, program consulting, and data management. Pomphrey Consulting’s Trauma Registrar Mentorship Training course is recognized by the American College of Surgeons as an equivalent training for the trauma registrar. |
